Breaking the Ice
Have you ever wonder what it would be like to take a cruise to Antarctica? Come join Elizabeth resident
Dr. Christina Hollis as she shares her adventure to the continent farthest down under on the
National Geographic Explorer ship.  The pictures and videos that she would like to share are spectacular.
See steel blue icebergs, humpback whales, variety of mischievous penguins, arrogant seals and
deserted whaling camps. This program will take place at the Planetary Studies Foundation
Earth and Space Science Museum on Friday evening, March 17 at 7:00 p.m.
This cost of this event is free for Planetary Studies members and $5.00 for others.

April 21
Come join Paul, Diane and Caroline Sipiera as they help the Putnam Museum celebrate their 150th
Anniversary. They will be introducing people to the world of meteorites and astronomy. There will be a
PowerPoint presentation during the day about the solar eclipse that will be taking place in North
America on Monday, August 21.

Meteorite scientist Paul Sipiera will be presenting at Lizzadro Museum about the various types of
meteorites, but he will be concentrating on the North American solar eclipse on Monday, August 21.
The Lizzadro Museum of Lapidary Art is located in beautiful Wilder Park in Elmhurst, Illinois.
Elmhurst is 16 miles due west of downtown Chicago.

The River Ridge School fourth graders will once again participate in the Night at the Museums.
The village Elizabeth is very fortunate to have five museums. The 1876 Banwarth House, Apple
River Fort State Historic Site, Chicago Great Western Railway Depot Museum, Elizabeth History
Museum, and the Planetary Studies Foundation Earth and Space Science Museum. Ridge
students will be taking on various historic characters in science, sports, literature, and culture.
Each room at the museums will be filled with family and friends to see their children's
interpretation of their character.

PSF members Jim Dole and Tom Dunmore are hosting this year's event especially notable since
2017 is the 50th Anniversary of the observatory (formerly the JETS Observatory).  Visitors are
welcomed to tour the observatory buildings to see the telescopes and equipment that we use. 
Observatory staff will be on hand to explain and answer questions about the observatory, the
telescopes, and the programs that we have to offer.  Various displays will be setup along with
demonstrations of safe solar viewing, and meteor detection by radio. Free.
